Man and Machine

'We are becoming the servants in thought, as in action, of the machine we have created to serve us.' [J. K. Galbraith]

Since the Stone Age, humans have used tools to make their work easier. But human life changes fundamentally with the Industrial Revolution and the development of ever more powerful machines. Factories increasingly supersede, not only home work and manufacturies, but also parts of crafts manship. Designed by creative inventors and built by humans, machines take over an ever growing share of the work.

Factory workers now have to adjust to the rhythm of the machines. Machine cycles and the clock control their workday.

Machines greatly contribute to increasing productivity and Raising prosperity. They relieve humans from hard and dangerous work and are precise and reliable. Like the machine tools in earlier times, information technologies are changing the world today.
